How to join the choir
The Royal Choral Society is always on the lookout for new members whether you’ve sung in a choir for 20 years or you are fresh out of school/university and want to continue your choral singing.
The choir meets for rehearsals every Monday between September and July (with Christmas and Easter breaks) in central London, singing from 6.30–8.30pm. The rehearsals are taken by our Music Director Richard Cooke, accompanied by Richard Pearce at the piano. We rehearse music for our upcoming concerts, with many weeks spent learning new music and more of a ‘brush up’ for regular repertoire such as Handel’s Messiah. Rehearsals are fun but focused and RCS members are a friendly bunch, so there are opportunities to socialise after rehearsal in the local wine bar.
Our schedule is varied but not onerous as we recognise that not all members can or wish to rehearse more than once a week. However, we operate a strict policy of attendance at a minimum number of rehearsals for a particular concert, this ensures the performance quality for which we are known.
As the Royal Choral Society is a charity, members pay a subscription to contribute towards the choir’s running costs. This is currently £150 per year (although any difficulty with this amount would be viewed sympathetically). We offer discounts to students. Music can be bought, and sometimes hired, through the choir.
To join the Royal Choral Society, it is necessary to pass a straightforward audition, and to maintain our high standards we have further re-auditions every three years. If you are interested in joining why not try us out at an ‘Open Rehearsal’?
Email our auditions secretary Andy Hartree or click the button below to fill in our online audition request, and Andy will send you all the info you need for your audition.
I wanted to sing classical music to a high standard in a friendly, quality choir which performed only with professional orchestras and soloists at quality venues. This is what the Royal Choral Society does and I love it.

Singing at a Monday rehearsal sets me up perfectly, however stressful the week. I am so proud to be part of this great choir.
’It’s such a privilege to sing much-loved choral works with renowned symphony orchestras in world-class performance venues.
