At the end of a busy season, we loosen our bow ties a little and invite you to join us at our summer soirée at St Giles Cripplegate; a great chance to enjoy some exquisite choral music in a relaxed atmosphere and get to know us over a glass of wine.

This year’s programme weaves a tapestry of musical eras and styles that’s both sacred and secular. The concert opens with four choruses from uncompleted operas by Mussorgsky which contrast with the serenity of two Duruflé motets (based on Gregorian chants) and Mozart’s Laudate Dominum. The tenors and basses will sing Britten’s impassioned setting of a medieval tale of secret love, savage murder and heart-rending remorse. The first part of the concert ends with Stanford’s enchanting motet, And I saw another angel.

Richard Pearce, our Royal Choral Society accompanist and organist will then play music by Bach on St Giles’ Grand Organ.

The second part of the evening is taken with Mozart’s Coronation Mass. Premiered in Salzburg at Easter in 1779, it acquired its nickname due to its popularity at the Imperial court in Vienna in the early nineteenth century.  An elegantly proportioned mass with uplifting choruses and refined solo passages, making a perfect finale for this celebratory summer’s evening.
