Royal Choral Society and the London Philharmonic Orchestra marked the 100th anniversary of the Great War Armistice with a concert of music and poetry that signified ‘Remembrance’ for this national day of commemoration.
The programme included Vaughan Williams’ impassioned Dona Nobis Pacem, set to evocative texts by Walt Whitman, and Elgar’s Enigma Variations, Ireland’s Greater Love Hath No Man and Elgar’s The Spirit of the Lord. Actor Paul McGann (Withnail & I, Doctor Who), who came to fame in the title role of First World War TV drama The Monocled Mutineer, read a selection of poignant First World War poetry.
This performance was in aid of Combat Stress, the charity helping former servicemen and women deal with trauma-related mental health problems.
